Disability FAQ's
Below you will find a selection of the type of questions and enquiries that the Disability CAN DO information team receive.
If you have any additional questions that needs an answer then please call our information line on 01495 233555 or fill out our online enquiry form.
Please also note that in addition to providing general information on disability related issues, we can signpost you to the main UK organisations, support groups and other help lines working in the disability field or help you to find a disability service within Caerphilly County Borough.
Q: I live in Caerphilly and use a wheelchair, what transport services are available to me?
A: Disability CAN DO can provide details of transport service, local transport schemes and taxi firms who use wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Q: Is there a 'Shopmobility Scheme' near me?
A: Disability CAN DO has details of all Shopmobility Schemes in our surrounding areas.
Q: How do I apply for a BLUE Parking Badge?
A: Disability CAN DO can inform you of the qualifying criteria, send you an information leaflet and provide details of how to apply.
Q: My elderly and disabled dad has just been discharged from hospital - what services are available to help him?
A: Disability CAN DO can help by talking you through the type of services that Caerphilly Adult Care Service and the Health Authority provide, explaining the criteria for provision.
Q: I have Multiple Sclerosis and my condition is deteriorating. I'm using my wheelchair more and more and am now unable to get up stairs. I'm confined to the ground floor of my home and the bathroom facilities and bedrooms are upstairs. Is there anything available to help me?
A: Disability CAN DO can explain the processes and agencies that can help with adaptations and equipment. We can also provide you with details of short-term alternatives for the interim. This may qualify you for a reduction in your Council Tax.
Q : What benefits is my wife entitled to? She is 50 years old and after an accident is using a wheelchair and is unable to look after her own personal care. She can no longer go to work, and I am having problems looking after her?
A: Disability CAN DO can describe what equipment and services are available to assist both you and your wife and can also tell you about local support groups and organisations, which could also help.
Q : Can I still get my Disability living Allowance (DLA) benefit if I'm working?
A: Yes, as it is not a 'means tested' benefit.
Q: I'm 72, how do I apply for DLA?
A: Unfortunately you must be under 65 in order to qualify for DLA but you might be eligible for Attendance Allowance (AA). Disability CAN DO will explain the qualifying criteria, send you an information leaflet.
Q : I'd like someone to help me complete my benefits application form?
A: Disability CAN DO can tell you about organisations in your area who can help you fill out the forms.
Q I'm thinking of purchasing an electric scooter?
A: Disability CAN DO will provide relevant advice, send you one of our free information sheets with useful tips and suggestions and direct you to organisations and companies who sell disability products.
